Custom Image Upload

Craig Tarr

My question is around the scene/background and whether the Custom Image Upload is meant to allow the user to take a still photo from phone or desktop (upload) and place the 3D rendered product on top?

I'm looking at the feasibility to allow the customer to view the rendered product & change out options but see it on a new background rather than in AR in their current location. Say for the Crate & Barrel Couches, see them in your house while at work, by uploading a photo previously taken at home.

Any suggested posts or documentation shortcut is welcomed.

Hi Craig, in a scene in Threekit you can certainly set the background style to image and have rules apply an uploaded image to that parameter.

For information on how to set up image uploads in Threekit you can use this guide.

All that being said, there are some considerations to make when it comes to having a static image in the background of a 3D space, particularly user-uploaded 2D images:

    • If it is 3D or real-time rendering, the item can be spun, zoomed in, and heavily interacted with. When the background image does not rotate, it will not always lead to an experience the user expects.
    • If you take a 2D approach somehow, you have to consider the placement of the item and where the shadows lie. For example, here is a pre-rendered background plate for an item - there is a spot exactly where the item fits, it is very precise
    • Finally - when it comes to user-uploaded images, the position of the picture taker is really important, the angle of the photo may not match the angle of the camera in the 3d space and it can lead to some outcomes that the user does not expect.

Again, it is certainly possible - these are just some things to consider when you experiment. I hope this is helpful, let me know if there is anything else I can help with or elaborate on.

William Thompson thanks for the reply and great context. There are several items that we need to discuss internally.
